Elon Musk wants to make Starbase in Texas the official “gateway to Mars.”

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is applying to a county in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley to incorporate its launch site into an official city called “Starbase, Texas,” which will serve as its headquarters and “gateway to Mars.”

Months after announcing he was moving SpaceX’s headquarters out of California, Musk announced in an X post last week, “SpaceX’s headquarters will now officially be located in the city of Starbase, Texas!”

Located in Cameron County in far South Texas, Starbase is currently an unincorporated community that serves as a hub for much of SpaceX’s rocket manufacturing, launches and operations, including its historic “rocket catch.”

The rocket launch is part of SpaceX’s “Starship” program, housed at its Starbase facilities and aimed at building the first fully reusable rocket to power human missions to establish a human presence on the Moon and Mars .

But to get to Mars, SpaceX says it needs the official Starbase in Texas.

“To continue to expand the workforce required to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to scale Starbase as a community. “For this reason, we demand that Cameron County hold an election to allow Starbase to be incorporated as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley,” Starbase General Manager Kathryn Lueders said in a letter to Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino.

In order to incorporate into a city in Texas, a county judge must order a special election in the township.

According to Lueders, Starbase’s integration will streamline the process of making Starbase a “world-class place to live” and enable the Starship program to “fundamentally transform humanity’s access to space.”

Musk announced in July that SpaceX would move its former headquarters in Hawthorne, California, to Starbase. Musk cited California’s SAFETY Act, which prohibits schools from requiring teachers to notify parents if their child identifies as transgender, as the reason for the move.

“This is the final straw that breaks the camel’s back,” Musk said

Now, Lueders said SpaceX is investing billions in infrastructure in Cameron County, generating hundreds of millions in revenue and taxes for local businesses and governments, “all with the goal of making South Texas the gateway to Mars.”

In her letter to Trevino, Lueders called Starbase a unique location for SpaceX’s future.

“Starbase is a unique site for the manufacture, testing and launch of the most advanced rockets and spacecraft ever conceived – a fully and rapidly reusable system that paves the way for humanity’s return to the Moon and eventual journey to Mars . “We look forward to continuing the transformation into a world-class center for the men and women working to make life multiplanetary.”
