Elton John can’t see the premiere of his new musical | Ents & Arts News

Sir Elton John was unable to attend the premiere of a new West End musical he had written lyrics for because he lost his sight.

The 77-year-old told the audience at the gala evening of the musical The Devil Wears Prada at the Dominion Theater in London: “It’s hard for me to see it (the show) but I love hearing it.”

Sir Eltonwho wrote the music for the musical, which is an adaptation of the film and book of the same name, added: “I couldn’t come to many previews because, as you know, I lost my voice and my eyesight.”

He was joined offstage on Sunday by his husband David Furnish, who the singer described as his “rock.”

Last weekThe singer said his vision loss also meant he was unable to finish his latest album, which he began working on with his long-time partner Bernie Taupin.

During an interview on ABC News’ “Good Morning America,” he admitted that it was fine for him to do interviews, but that he was unable to read or watch anything.

Sir Elton first revealed he was struggling with his eyesight in an Instagram post in September after he said he had suffered from an infection in one of his eyes.

At the time, he said it was “curable” but the recovery process was “extremely slow” and “it will take some time before the affected eye can see again.”

Sunday’s London gala attracted a host of famous faces, including Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Italian designer Donatella Versace and Emily In Paris star Lily Collins.
