Elton John confirms fans can expect “more” Colbert music

“The juices never ran dry,” the musician said during an interview on the late night show

Elton John came by The Late Show to discuss his documentary, Elton John: Never too late. During the long conversation with host Stephen Colbert, the singer said that fans can expect new music.

“You’ll get more,” John confirmed. “The juices never dried out. They never want to run out because I’m always looking for something new. It’s just about having the space to do it on my own time now. Of course there will be new music from Elton John.”

John also discussed the documentary, directed by David Furnish and RJ Cutler and now available on Disney+. When asked about the film’s title, John replied that it means, “It’s never too late to change your life. To make decisions that will make your life better.” He added that despite all his success , as he is portrayed in the film, is “incredibly unhappy”. When Colbert asked if John wanted to give his younger self any advice, the singer replied, “Stay away from cocaine.”

He added: “I just wasted so much of my life doing the stupidest things, and then I got sober and made amends and started a new life together and it was fantastic.”

Colbert later brought Brandi Carlile over to John so the pair could talk about their song “Never Too Late,” which was written for the film. John thought about working with Carlile and supporting many of the younger artists he admires, including Chappell Roan and the Linda Lindas. “These young artists have so much energy, they are so good, and if there is any way I can help them get a foot on the ladder, I will,” he remarked.

Earlier this week, “Never Too Late” made the Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song. Carlile initially wrote the song after watching an early clip of the documentary, drawing inspiration from Bernie Taupin’s signature style. She and John co-wrote the final track, with Andrew Watt providing additional writing and producing.
