End of the road for Bill Maher? HBO releases trailer for Comic’s 13th standup special

Bill Maher made headlines last spring when he told Jerry Seinfeld that he planned to retire from stand-up at the end of the year.

If that’s still his plan, there’s no mention of it in the just-released trailer for his 13th HBO standup special (above), although he appears to be at his wits’ end in the new clip where he sees the Longtimer Real Time with Bill Maher The moderator expresses his despair at the current state of American politics.

“I’ve been in states where Republicans don’t even mention politics in their advertising,” Maher says in the trailer. “It’s just a guy with a gun in a truck with a gun. Gun, truck. truck, gun. I like these things that you like. Choose me.

About Donald Trump, Maher jokes that he is “Jesus in reverse, other people die for his sins.”

The trailer ends with Maher on his knees asking the crowd, “See what I’m talking about to the crazy people? Please, does anyone else see this?”

As for his retirement plans, Maher seemed serious about putting down the mic when Jerry Seinfeld appeared on Maher’s “Club Random” podcast in May.

“I’m nervous to tell you. I feel like you’re the confessor,” Maher told Seinfeld, “but after this year I’m going to quit stand-up.”

Maher was quick to give himself a chance. “I could go back. I don’t want to make a big announcement or anything like that,” he warned. “I mean, I’m doing a special at the end of the year. It will be my 13th for HBO. That’s a lot.”

Maher went on to explain that he doesn’t have the time to dedicate to stand-up that he feels he needs. “I put a lot of time and effort into it because as you know, stand-up is like playing the cello. You can’t just go up there. You have to stay in practice. And I do. And I’ve always loved it. And I’m constantly working on it. But I have a show,” he argued, referring to HBO’s Real timeto which the host has committed until 2026.

That commitment clearly remains the priority for Maher. Seinfeld pressed the host on whether he was considering closure Real timenoting that Maher has been in the talk show business for 31 years (since Politically incorrect premiere in 1993).

“Well, I definitely wouldn’t want to give up right now,” Maher replied, “because I feel like I’m at my best.” And a lot of people tell me that.”

Maher noted that part of it Real time In particular, it continues to bring him fulfillment. “I think what stand-up means to you,” he told Seinfeld, “is what writing that editorial at the end of the show means to me.”

In the Club randomly In this episode, Maher also discussed the podcast itself and how it might factor into his plans. “If I don’t have to practice cello eight hours a day, I might want to do some of these things live. This is an interesting option that people are using these days. It’s a kind of event.
