Epic Games is paying $100 to hundreds of thousands of Fortnite players

The Federal Trade Commission is pushing Fortnite Developer Epic Games will pay back more than $72 million to around 629,000 customers on Monday. Each affected individual will receive approximately $114 from the FTC if they successfully file a claim. The payments follow a 2022 settlement in which the federal agency alleged Epic Games “induced” users to spend money on the platform.

The refunds will be distributed on Monday and will constitute the first round of payments. An FTC statement said the agency would “distribute additional money at a later date,” but gave no further details. The government will transfer the money via check and PayPal. The FTC said recipients should clear their PayPal payment within 30 days and their checks within 90 days. Anyone with additional questions should contact the refund administrator listed in the FTC notice.

The payments follow a 2022 settlement in which the FTC secured $520 million after arguing that Fortnite violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and “used design tricks, so-called dark patterns, to trick millions of players into making unintended purchases.” These payments refer to those who fall into the second category of arguments and due to the duplicitous design of the accidentally made a purchase while playing the game.

If you think you have made an accidental purchase Fortniteit’s not too late to get involved in the refunds. Anyone who suspects they may be affected can file a claim online today.
