Eryk Anders makes Chris Weidman pay for his mistake with a TKO

A critical flaw in fight IQ paved the way for Chris Weidman to be defeated by Eryk Anders at UFC 310.

After Weidman (16-8 MMA, 12-8 UFC) scored a knockdown in the opening round of Saturday’s 195-pound catchweight bout at T-Mobile Arena, he attempted an ill-advised choke attempt that defeated Anders (17-7). allowed MMA, 9-8 UFC) to put himself in a position to open and close the job by second-round TKO.

The first round was complete aggression from Anders, who attempted multiple takedowns and hurt Weidman with a headbutt. He also landed an illegal punch on a downed opponent just as Weidman was getting up, but he was able to keep fighting and soon landed a huge punch that knocked Anders to the ground and left him in survival mode for the rest of the round.

Anders appeared to have recovered at the start of the second frame and heeded his coaches’ advice to push the attack harder. He closed the distance and Weidman dropped to his back to perform an unsuccessful guillotine, which cost him dearly because Anders got on top and spent the next few minutes landing punches from above. Weidman received several warnings to defend himself, and Anders opened the game to force Mark Smith to stop it at the 4:51 mark of Round 2.

Despite scoring arguably the biggest win of his career against a former UFC champion, Anders said that highlight will be one of the last of his career as he revealed he intends to retire after a few more fights.

“I’ve got two more,” Anders said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. “I’m not after the belt. I don’t care about the top 15. Whoever wants to come in here and create some variety, I’m there.”
