European football: Bayern beat Leipzig 5-1 as Reijnders secures Christmas win | European club football

Bayern Munich stamped their authority in the Bundesliga by finishing fourth RB Leipzig 5-1 in a game in which, for the first time in league history, there were two goals in the first two minutes.

After losing their first league game of the season to Mainz last week, Bayern put in a confident performance against a Leipzig team that was struggling to build momentum on offense.

Bayern lead the table with 36 points, seven points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who play Freiburg on Saturday. Eintracht Frankfurt is in third place with 27 goals and is ahead of Leipzig on goal difference. It will be the 26th time that Bayern have taken the top spot at Christmas, having won the title in 23 of the previous 25 times.

The game got off to a remarkable start when Harry Kane’s deft backheel shot put Michael Olise in front and after 28 seconds he crossed to the red-hot Jamal Musiala who buried the ball. Leipzig hit back almost immediately as Loïs Openda escaped down the right and his cross was fired home by Benjamin Sesko.

Bayern dominated the rest of the game and scored their second goal in the 25th minute when former Leipzig player Konrad Laimer scored his first Bayern goal by side-footing a volley from a clever Olise cross. Joshua Kimmich fired a typical long-range shot into the goal after 36 minutes, giving the hosts a deserved 3-1 lead at half-time, while Leipzig failed to manage another shot on goal.

The visitors showed a little more attack in the second half without appearing dangerous, while Bayern continued to create chances. Olise rolled narrowly wide, Kane fired a powerful shot too close to goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and Leroy Sané shot wide before Sané scored the fourth goal after 75 minutes after a through ball from Alphonso Davies. Two minutes later, Davies headed the fifth goal from a perfect Kimmich cross.

A miserable evening for Leipzig ended when Benjamin Henrichs suffered a serious injury in the final minute, collapsing on the pitch outside the game and being carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Kane looked rusty after missing two games with a hamstring injury, but played 87 minutes and helped Bayern get back on track after a rocky run.
