Everton 4-0 Wolves: Final | The Blues break the goal drought with a clear win

Full time thoughts – Everton can claim to have been the better team, but where they really counted was from set pieces against a truly pathetic Wolves defense. The four goals scored today equalize the goal difference created by the defeat at Old Trafford.

90+4′ – The final whistle blows, Everton beat Wolves 4-0 and climbed out of the relegation zone.

90+3′ – Ooooh. Young finds Broja, who looks hungry, fires a shot, parries it and falls to Harrison, who fires it in row Z, oof.

90+2′ – Armstrong is immediately in trouble as he is booked for a reckless tackle.

90th minute – Young midfielder Harrison Armstrong is now in action and Orel Mangala received a big round of applause, he was great today.
This adds about four minutes.

87′ – Good break for the Blues, Lindstrom finds Broja in space, he fends off the attention of two defenders and finds Lindstrom again, passes the ball to Harrison who shoots over the goal.
Broja is back on the ball and sets Harrison up for a shot, but Wolves have enough men to smother the ball.

85′ – Handbags, because Branthwaite and Larsen have a thing or two to say to each other.

83′ – Big applause as Armando Broja makes his Everton debut, coming on for DCL. Jesper Lindstrom also works for Doucour.

82′ – Low cross into the goal, but Pickford concedes safely. Everton just need to get through the rest without any further problems.

78th minute – Ndiaye clatters but can continue.

74th minute – After the goal, McNeil comes into play with Jack Harrison.

72nd minute – Ndiaye turns with the ball and is knocked down. Free kick from McNeil who caused so much havoc. He delivers again and Everton scores again!! 4-0, with a flying header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. No wait, DCL missed it, it went in from Dawson!
A quick VAR review for offside but it’s a goal, boy we needed that for our goal difference!

70′ – Everton have a chance to break and McNeil has both DCL and Doucoure in front of him and plays it between both players. Enigmatic.

66′ – Woah, the post saves the day!! Cross into the box and there are several black shirts in there, Doherty’s looping header hits the post and comes back into the five yard box before Young throws himself in front of another shot and the Blues can clear!

65th minute – Everton have a fourth goal but Ndiaye’s goal is rightly disallowed. McNeil, Mangala and Young combine to cross the ball into the box, DCL runs into Sa and the ball falls to Ndiaye who puts it into the goal.

62′ – Cunha dances his way past Young and Ndiaye, his goal is blocked by Larsen but Branthwaite does enough to put him off.

59′ – Cunha corner, DCL is on Lemina like butter on toast and the Wolves player shoots the ball for a goal kick.

57th minute – DCL receives a long ball from Pickford, but his volley goes wide.
Wolves make their first change, with striker Hwang replacing Guedes.

55th minute – Everton’s midfielders do their best, jumping into tackles and sliding to block passes.

49th minute – Ait-Nouri misses a corner on the Everton right side. McNeil inswinger, GOAL!! Ndiaye was right in front of Sa and managed enough to throw him off when Calvert-Lewin easily headed the ball to make it 3-0 for Everton. This would actually be an own goal as it is hit by Dawson’s arm!

47th minute – Cunha takes the corner but Tarky, who gives the ball away, thwarts Dawson and Pickford concedes.

46′ – Second half underway.
Wolves immediately push forward but Everton are trying to ensure they don’t repeat the mistakes they made at Old Trafford.

Halftime thoughts – Everton lead Wolves 2-0 with a stronger attacking performance than we’ve seen in a few games. The key will be to stay aggressive and ensure they keep pushing in the second half.

45+7′ – The Wolves attack the Blues on the left, but then the half-time whistle sounds.

45+5′ – Ndiaye is strong against Ait-Nouri near the goal line and it goes for an Everton goal kick.

45+3′ – Everton play a lot of sideways passes followed by a deep ball. This ends up in front of Doucs and for some reason he shoots a slap shot from about thirty yards away. Doesn’t even catch it well.

45th minute – Cunha’s ball falling deep into the penalty area is left behind by Larsen, but Pickford concentrates fully on the ball.
This adds more than six minutes considering we scored two goals and also a VAR review.

43′ – Chance! Mangala wins a bouncing ball, McNeil adjusts and fires a left-footed volley that looks like it’s going into the goal until a Wolves header deflects it for a corner.
McNeil’s inswinger, Tarky runs away from Lemina and heads it down… straight at Sa. Oooh.

40′ – Wolves play through the Toffees’ pressing but Everton hold firm at the back.

35th minute – Now Doucs and Mangala have a foul on Ait-Nouri and the Wolves have a free kick chance of their own. Hit wide and past Dawson.

33′ – Another free kick, same position as the second (unallowed) goal. Just before McNeil hits the ball, partially cleared, Myko fires a shot, is blocked, falls to Mangala and he shoots home!! It’s 2-0 and the referee won’t void it for any reason, the midfielder makes up for his part in Tarky’s goal.

32′ – Everton are lucky again. The deep diagonal finds Doherty in space, his volleyed cross is blocked by a wide-open Larsen, neither Branthwaite nor Tarky knew what was going on and the striker doesn’t make good contact.

29′ – Tarky, with both nostrils plugged to stop the bleeding, gives Strand Larsen far too much space and he fires a shot from a tight angle which Pickford parries and the Blues clear.

26th minute – Cunha seemingly intentionally throws an elbow into Tarky’s face, but nothing comes from the referee. The Everton player needs medical attention but should be able to carry on.

24′ – Mangala sees Young’s run on the right, the veteran with a low ball over the goal, but it evades about four blue shirts in the penalty area.

20′ – Ball comes to DCL and he fires a shot which Sa parries. The Blues wanted to make it count quickly after repelling a lovely ball from McNeil, allowing DCL to get clear.

15′ – Dawson throws over DCL on the run and it’s another free kick for the Blues, a little closer to the touchline. McNeil delivers a whipped inswinger, Tarkowski just manages to head the ball with three defenders around him and beats Sa, it’s 2-0!!!

The goal is reviewed as Mangala was offside. Did he really disrupt the game? He seems to have got Lemina out of the way. The referee Michael Salisbury goes to the monitor and disallows the goal, so it remains 1-0 to the Blues.

10′ – Doucs wins the header deep in Wolves’ half, DCL is fouled and the ball comes back to Doucs who hits it wildly over goal. He was offside, but the referee awarded a free kick for the original foul on the striker just outside the penalty area.
Ashley Young stands over it with determination, hits low and hits Sa!!! Sneaks it around the wall and at the far post, 1-0 to the Toffees!!!

8′ – Pickford! Cunha pounces on a loose ball, gets it back and fires a shot that the England number 1 does well to deflect deep on the left.

4′ – Miscommunication between Dawson and Sa but Everton are not close to the ball to take advantage.
Now the Wolves win a corner after a Tarkovsky block. Wild shot from Gomes and the Blues have a free kick.

3′ – Ndiaye works hard and steals the ball from Cunha on the edge of the attacking third, but Doucoure promptly loses the ball and receives a foul.

2′ – Already trouble. Ait-Nouri screams wide down the left and his cutback is perfect for Strand Larsen, but the Dane turns it into a right-wing attempt. Phew.

1′ – We’re on the way!

Enjoy the air raid siren and then the gentle tones of Z Cars playing at the Grand Old Lady as we look at recent games at Goodison Park, particularly a night game under the lights.

Speaking of lights at Goodison, did you notice?

Everton – Sean Dyche goes even more conservative, dropping Lindstrom to make room for Mangala. At least this will get McNeil out of the game again.

Wolves – Gary O’Neil makes four changes from the weekend.

Everton must win now. No more ifs, buts and any other kind of excuses. Given the difficult schedule they face next month, the Toffees need to pick up as many points as possible in home games, especially against teams around them in the table.

According to the statisticians, Wolves have endured their most difficult start to a Premier League season ever and that is probably the only reason why they are behind the Blues in the table. However, with Matheus Cunha scoring world champion points every two weeks, they want to move up the table.

The Everton fan base is depressed and frustrated and a poor start today will only further demoralize the Goodison crowd and in the end they will take it out on the players on the pitch.

Wolves achieved the double against the Toffees last season, winning 1-0 at Goodison and 3-0 at Molineux. In fact, the Blues have failed to beat Wolves in their last six games, with five defeats and one draw, while scoring three times and conceding ten goals. Yikes.
