Every word of Mikel’s post-Ipswich press release | Press conference | News

Mikel Arteta sat down in front of the media at the Emirates Stadium on Friday evening for his press conference after Ipswich Town.

He reflected on our 1-0 win, shared team news and more.

Here’s what he had to say on the following topics.

for overall performance:
I’m very happy with the win, with the goal conceded and with large parts of the game. It’s a really difficult opponent. We play so many games. You see teams winning with very small margins. Today we could have made the margins much larger. In the end we didn’t do it. But we held our nerve in the last few minutes to defend well in the areas we needed to and I’m very, very happy.

on whether the team should have scored more:
More, more. And today we also had some big openings in the second half when we were a little more tense and a little more aggressive. Also the big header from Gabi, one yard. So we should have scored more goals, but it’s down to consistency. The team again conceded nothing. Their defensive behavior was again excellent. That’s something that always gives us the chance to win games.

For more news on Bukayo Saka:
I’d rather leave that to the doctor himself. But he had a procedure. Everything went well. But unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks.

on Raheem Sterling’s fitness:
Yes, I think the news with Raz is better. We’ll have to see how he develops this week. But we assume that the knee injury will probably last longer than the knee has actually developed in the last few days. Hopefully that’s good because we need him.

about Gabriel Martinelli, who plays on the right:
As I said, I think the replacement for B will be the team, you know, and this unit in particular and the minutes together, asking different questions and doing that. There were moments when things went really well. There were moments when we still need to do a lot there to improve it and adapt it to the qualities of the individuals. And I am sure we will do it.

on whether tonight was a more satisfactory result than Palace:
In terms of how well we control the position, 10 times because we conceded 14 or 15 shots against Palace. And it’s not something we normally do. So overall I think this one was much better. But it’s also about the goals and the beauty of it and entertaining people, and that was probably better for them.

on the timeline of Saka’s absence:
I said many weeks, so I think it will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how long it will take, I think it will depend, you know. How the scar tissue starts to heal in the first week or so. The mobility of it. Let’s see. That’s very difficult to say.

on how our defensive shape will change if players are missing:
Well, that’s always important, because even at Bukayo it doesn’t mean that we score three or four goals in every game. So we have to rely on the team. This is our greatest strength. We never rely on one individual to score 25 or 30 goals and we have managed to still be very, very competitive and we will do that.

on what Martinelli needs to be successful on the right:
Gabby needs people around her. He needs constant threat. He always has to be in the back row when the ball is on his side, that he has relationships there and people close to him because he is very intuitive. He is always a threat. I think if you isolate too much you will suffer, especially if you play with a natural right foot, and these are things that we can develop and improve.
