Ten men Manchester United knocked arsenal were eliminated from the FA Cup on penalties after holding their nerve to reach the fourth round. United were down to 10 for over an hour but missed chances cost Arsenal when Kai Havertz missed in the shootout.

After a subdued first half, Bruno Fernandes got the tie going with a brilliant first counter-attack finish, but United’s advantage was short-lived as Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second yellow card.

Dalot’s mistake was punished with an immediate Arsenal equalizer when Gabriel struck in, but the Gunners then missed the chance to take the lead as Martin Odegaard saw a penalty saved by goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

The save had an air of justice as Kai Havertz appeared to make the most of the minimal contact in the penalty area and a chaotic scuffle ensued between players, resulting in multiple yellow cards.

From then on, Arsenal missed several chances to win in normal time, with Bayindir making important saves and Havertz wasting a great opportunity from close range. Matthijs de Ligt then made a spectacular save in the first half of extra time.

Joshua Zirkzee could have hit the ball when his deflected shot was pushed onto the post by David Raya, but in the shootout Bayindir saved another penalty, this time from Havertz, and the defending champions advanced to the fourth round draw.
