Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel caused a stir with an interview before the Rose Bowl on Wednesday.

The No. 1 seed Ducks took on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a rematch of one of the most exciting college football matchups of the season for the 2025 Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Oregon’s high-powered offense earned a narrow victory when the two teams met earlier in the season, but in the lead-up to this week’s bowl game, their quarterback has garnered attention for an entirely different reason.

The 24-year-old took a bizarre turn of events during an interview with KOIN News reporter Brenna Greene on Monday.

When asked what could give the Ducks a competitive advantage, Gabriel first gave a clear answer about situational football and his team’s ability to make plays.

But then the interview took a strange turn when he went off topic and started raving about domes and the sun.

“We love the rose bowl,” he continued. “We love warm weather. I think we should play more football on nice grass instead of artificial turf. And the more sun the better, why do we do this to ourselves? Do fans want to sit in the snow and rain?

“Let’s just build arenas.” Let’s make domes. Let’s make weed. “Let’s have more fireworks at games.”

The signal-caller’s reaction sparked a reaction from college football fans on social media, with many suspecting he was high.

One stunned social media user responded to the clip by asking: “This guy must be stoned, right?” lol wants domes, weed, weather, fireworks – I think what he’s actually saying is that he wants a retractable roof needs?”

“He clearly has a thing for weed,” another claimed alongside a GIF of actor Mark Wahlberg pretending to smoke.

“When the edibles came,” another joked, while another added: “Yoooooo he got rid of the cali weed and mushrooms lmaooo.”

“Bro higher than Aaron Rodgers on a trip to Ecuador (sic),” one wrote, referring to the New York Jets quarterback’s ayahuasca retreats.

Greene quickly clarified the situation and confirmed that Gabriel was not, in fact, high.

“Just to say: Media day was at 8:00 a.m. and an hour. “Dillon wasn’t high,” she wrote, quoting her original video on Twitter.

“He’s being silly and I’m sure the combined exhaustion of how early it was and how much demand he had probably contributed to that quote.”

“Kind of annoyed that something innocent and funny was chosen, but that’s the internet for you.”

Gabriel, a sixth-grader, enters the Rose Bowl Wednesday night second in FBS passing yards, trailing only Case Keenum.
