Fantasy Football: Jalen McMillan among top sleeper picks for Week 16

The sleeper side slept for most of the 15th week. The Browns passing game was a mess, with Sincere McCormick and Zach Ertz injured. Stone Smartt exceeded his prediction (he’s also a reasonable choice going forward), but it’s not like 5-50-0 is a weekly winning haul.

Let’s try to flip the script in Week 16.

Maye’s rookie year was an overwhelming success, as he remained poised and accurate despite mediocre help around him (New England’s offensive line is a problem and the receiver room lacks a true No. 1 option). Maye also helps his cause with his athleticism and resourceful running. He’s quietly been the QB12 in cumulative fantasy points since earning the starting job in Week 6.

No one expects New England to challenge Buffalo, but the Patriots will likely have to throw more often than usual, which is standard procedure for a two-touchdown underdog. Maye should be in the 16-19 point range this week.

I guess it’s better late than never, as Rodgers finally reached the 300-yard plateau two weeks ago and then scored 30 fantasy points last week. The Rams defense was accessible to opposing quarterbacks and gave up the ninth-most QB points to opponents.

And Rodgers is finally comfortable with Davante Adams again – they were unstoppable in the second half against Jacksonville. Rodgers should be good for multiple touchdown passes, and even though the Rams didn’t show up on offense last week, I could see this game turning into a sneaky shootout.

It’s not uncommon for rookie receivers to improve their performance in the latter stages of the season as they gain some experience and confidence. McMillan is one of those cases, with a useful 9-134-3 line in his last two games.

The Tampa Bay-Dallas game has the highest point total of the week and the Cowboys are the 10th best matchup for opposing receivers. I expect McMillan to score 6-8 goals on Sunday night, with some of that work being in the goal area.

I want you to add and hide Bateman with an eye toward Week 17 when he draws the leaky Houston secondary. Pittsburgh is a difficult game in Week 16 – the Steelers defend Lamar Jackson better than the rest of the league – and Bateman was quiet in the previous matchup (2-30-0).

That being said, Bateman has also scored four touchdowns in his last five games and the Ravens like to throw him a few deep hits every week. Assuming Bateman’s midweek foot injury isn’t a cause for concern (he was reportedly seen in a walking boot in the Ravens’ locker room), he’s worth considering as an emergency player this week – and a worthwhile depth addition when you look ahead.

It’s strange that Strange is so prevalent after his 11-catch game against the Jets. Obviously, no one expects Strange to repeat that line — and Jacksonville certainly won’t throw as much as he did last week — but he’s still the No. 2 player in this passing game and an easy target for backup QB Mac Jones.

Strange is dealing with a shoulder injury, so stay tuned for his training status at the end of the week. But assuming he’s cleared, I think 5-6 catches is a starting point for him against a mediocre Raiders defense.

There are a lot of moving parts here as the Saints play on Monday night and we don’t yet know if Alvin Kamara (groin) will be available. The Saints are also playing with a backup quarterback and face a strong Green Bay defense. This game could easily get out of hand as the Packers have the advantage by about two touchdowns.

But Miller has looked good over the past two weeks, and with Monday night looking unlikely, expect Miller to get 12 to 15 touches no matter how competitive the game is. This type of workload is currency in the fantasy world.

I actually think Ameer Abdullah is a better player than Mattison right now, but they’re doing different things. Abdullah’s fantasy case is better if the Raiders are underdogs (he’s the third-down defenseman), but Mattison has a more plausible path to touches considering Las Vegas is actually a slight favorite over the Jaguars.

Jacksonville’s defense doesn’t stop much, and that includes the run – it’s the third-best matchup of opposing defenses in terms of fantasy points scored. Mattison recorded double-digit carries in four straight games midway through the year, and I suspect he already has that workload under his belt as game day approaches. Volume is your best friend in the backfield.

I wonder when the Patriots will recognize Gibson as one of their impact players. He averaged 5.86 yards per carry over the last five games and showed his explosiveness as a receiver in the loss to Arizona. The passing role, in particular, will likely increase this week as New England will find itself in a negative game situation against heavily favored Buffalo. I can imagine a setup where Gibson scores double digits in every league that has some version of PPR scoring.
