The 2024 college football regular season reached its climax last Sunday with the unveiling of the official standings for the first edition of the 12-team College Football Playoff.

While the debate rages over whether SMU should have secured the final overall spot over Alabama, there is at least one big event between the playoff selection show and the first playoff game on December 20th.

On Saturday evening, shortly after the conclusion of the annual Army-Navy game, the Heisman Trophy will be awarded to the most outstanding player in college football.

From Travis Hunter to Ashton Jeanty, the 2024 season has featured several stars who have thrilled fans across the country and helped their teams achieve numerous successes. However, only one of these exceptional players will join a long and distinguished list of some of the best and most revered players in college football history by winning a trophy that will be associated with them for the rest of their lives.

Who are the players competing for the prestigious award? Here’s a look at the 2024 Heisman Trophy finalists:

Four players will travel to New York for Saturday’s Heisman Trophy ceremony: Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami quarterback Cam Ward.

Jeanty would be the first player from Boise State to ever win the Heisman, while Colorado, Oregon and Miami each had at least one Heisman winner in their respective histories.

∎ While he helped coach Deion Sanders’ team to a 9-3 record, Travis Hunter put together a season unlike any other in recent FBS history, playing the overwhelming majority of the Buffaloes’ snaps while playing on both sides of the ball. On offense, he has a team-high 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns, while recording 11 passes defensed, four interceptions and one forced fumble on defense.

∎ Ashton Jeanty stands on the precipice of one of college football’s most historic statistical benchmarks, as his 2,497 yards rank him fourth on the all-time FBS single-base rushing list, just 131 yards shy of Barry Sanders’ long-standing record. He was also efficient, averaging 7.3 yards per carry for a Broncos team that earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. Jeanty is aiming to become the first running back to win the Heisman since 2015.

∎ A transfer to Oklahoma, Dillon Gabriel was the most decorated offensive player on the sport’s best team. The sixth-grader threw for 3,558 yards, 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions for the Ducks, the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and the only undefeated team at the FBS level. He also has 192 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

∎ Although his team stumbled along the way – losing two of its last three games and missing the playoffs – Cam Ward was spectacular for the Hurricanes after they transferred from Washington State last offseason. He has thrown for 4,123 yards, the second-highest mark in the FBS, and an FBS-leading 36 touchdowns.

Interestingly, this is the second straight season in which three of the four Heisman finalists began their college careers elsewhere. Gabriel and Ward are both in their third school.

Heisman Trophy odds

In recent weeks, Hunter has become the betting favorite to win the Heisman.

According to BetMGM odds, Hunter is at -2500 to take home the award. Jeanty has the next best odds at +1,000, while Gabriel and Ward are the much bigger underdogs at +25,000 each.

When will the Heisman Trophy winner be announced?

The Heisman Trophy ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 14th starting at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The presentation is part of an hour-long program that airs on ESPN, with the award typically presented in the back half of the time slot.
