Fire breaks out in PortMiami freight yard – NBC 6 South Florida

A new video shows flames shooting into the air after a car caught fire in a shipping container in PortMiami late Friday.

The inferno occurred around 11:30 p.m. when witness Ty Davis said an explosion rocked the harbor and surrounding area.

Davis, who was at Gramps Getaway on the Rickenbacker Causeway with a group of friends, said he felt the boom from across the water.

“Next thing you know, we just hear a super loud explosion, like a loud chest bang. And we were very confused about the direction it was coming from and for a while there was no smoke, nothing,” he said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that a vehicle caught fire in a shipping container.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames.

Nobody was injured.

Davis said he heard several pops after the first one.

“When I heard something like that afterwards, I became a little more concerned,” he said. “I thought: Did a cruise ship explode, was this a cargo thing, was this planned, was this an accident?”

Several videos on social media showed the flames shooting into the night sky. Videos also captured the aftermath as crews worked to contain the fire.

“The way (the sound) echoed through the dock, I felt it disappear from my chest to my feet in one motion,” Davis said. “Very, very unexpected explosion, I’ve never heard anything like it here before.”

Officials are investigating what caused the fire.
