Firefighters establish containment area for Hurst Fire in Sylmar

Progress was made on the Hurst Fire in Sylmar on Thursday as firefighters were able to minimize the blaze overnight, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

The fast-spreading fire was first reported Tuesday evening in the 15900 block of W. Yarnell Street and quickly grew to 850 acres Wednesday evening, requiring the evacuation of more than 3,000 residents, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

California Highway Patrol officials who witnessed the flames said an entire mountainside appeared to be burning.

As of 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, Cal Fire reported the fire was 10% contained, where it remains as of Thursday.

LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said the Hurst Fire is burning in the footprint of 2019’s historic footprint Saddle Ridge Firethat burned nearly 9,000 acres. She said Thursday: “Firefighters have maintained containment within a secured containment area and are successful and we have established a perimeter.”

Cal Fire said crews responded to multiple outbreaks in the fire area. “Firefighters successfully contained the fire north of the I-210 Foothill Freeway and established control lines to Santa Clara Divide Road.”

Early Wednesday morning, California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced this was the case secured federal assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Fire Management Assistance Grant.

“We are working aggressively to ensure maximum support for firefighting in Los Angeles, including the Hurst fire that now threatens San Fernando and Newhall,” Newsom said in a statement.

Evacuation orders and road closures

Evacuation orders have been issued for people living north of the I-210 Freeway from Roxford to the I-5/SR-14 Freeway split, fire officials said.

The westbound lanes of the 210 Freeway were closed due to smoke from the fire, causing significant traffic in the area. All lanes were finally reopened on Wednesday.

Just south, in Sun Valley, another fire was reported that started at a commercial building and quickly spread to nearby brush. This fire forced the temporary closure of I-5 in the area.

Evacuation warnings have been issued for residents near the 5 Freeway near Woodley/Balboa to Lahey Street and Zelzah Avenue.

Firefighters urged residents in the area to “prepare to evacuate” because of the fire.

An evacuation center has opened at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, located at 10736 Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Pacoima. Additional evacuation centers have been set up at Northridge Park at 10120 Reseda Boulevard and the Sepulveda Recreation Center at 8825 Kester Avenue.
