Five things to know about Oregon’s newest OL Alex Harkey

When Oregon has a glaring hole on the roster or at a particular position, Dan Lanning doesn’t wait to see if a rookie develops, he just hopes for the best. Lanning enters the transfer portal and stands out as one of the best available at the position, so there is no longer a gap on the roster.

In this case, the glaring hole was the offensive line in 2025, and Lanning was previously able to sign the No. 6 offensive lineman in the portal in Alex Harkey from Texas State and Colorado.

Harkey has developed into a premier offensive lineman at 6 feet 6 inches tall and 325 pounds. He was one of the Sun Belt Conference’s best offensive linemen as Texas State posted a 7-5 record this season. With three different transfers and four stops along the way, he’s seen a lot. Harkey saw firsthand how Colorado coach Deion Sanders approached some Buffalo players and whether they fit into his system and culture.

Harkey did not do this and moved on to Texas State, where he developed into a very good player. Sanders’ loss is now Oregon’s gain.

Harkey stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 325 pounds, and as a redshirt senior in 2025, he could conceivably join Oregon’s offensive line and be an immediate starter or at least in the rotation. The Ducks will be losing some linemen to eligibility, so there is definitely room for Harkey, and with his experience he will fit in perfectly.

According to On3.com, Harkey was the No. 6 offensive lineman in the transfer portal before signing with Oregon. They also give it four stars and a rating of 91.82. Georgia Tech’s Korey Robinson is the next highest available lineman.

Harkey was part of the mass exodus from Colorado after Deion Sanders was hired as head coach. Over 60 players left Boulder for greener pastures and Harkey ended up at Texas State, where he spent two seasons before transferring to Eugene.

Harkey has had quite the journey in high school. He wasn’t a particularly good recruit and started his career at Tyler Junior College before heading to Colorado. Harkey played on special teams for the Buffaloes, where he appeared in all 12 games. He had to move on to the state of Texas. Harkey finished his time at Texas State as a third-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection.

Unlike most of his new teammates at Oregon, Harkey was not a highly touted recruit from Hays, Texas. He played defensive line and tight end in high school. As a senior in 2019, Harkey caught six passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns. He also played basketball. In his true freshman season at Tyler JC, Harkey played in four games as a tight end.
