Flavor Flav says NBC made him leave the Backstreet Boys dressing room at Tree Lighting

  • Flavor Flav attended NBC’s Christmas event at Rockefeller Center in New York City on December 4th, where the Backstreet Boys, among others, performed
  • The rapper then took to social media to claim that NBC asked him to leave the Backstreet Boys’ dressing room after he was invited inside
  • “The situation was handled poorly,” Flav later told fans on social media, noting that he “didn’t know how many people would care” after the moment made headlines

Flavor Flav isn’t feeling the Christmas spirit — at least not after an incident that occurred during the annual Christmas event at Rockefeller Center in New York City on Wednesday, December 4.

In a now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) post that has since been shared by multiple media outlets, the 65-year-old rapper said he had an unpleasant encounter with security while visiting the Backstreet Boys backstage at NBC’s tree lighting . “I feel weird,” he wrote. “I was invited to the Rockefeller Tree Lighting this evening and was accompanied by my boys.”

“And we were backstage in their dressing room when security came up to me and said NBC doesn’t want me in that area and I have to leave,” Flav continued. “At the same time, her social media lady came and asked to capture social content.”

He concluded by asking, “What have I ever done with NBC or anyone (??)?” All I ever do is spread joy and love (,) and I believe I did that for NBC at the Olympics.”

In an update posted hours later, he wrote: “I deleted the tweet(,) but my spirit is broken.”

The Taste of love star contacted X again the next day with a detailed explanation of what happened. “I posted something last night and quickly deleted it. I was embarrassed by some of the statements and actions of security guards who threw their weight around,” he began.

“The situation was poorly handled and I didn’t know how many people would care. “Thank you all for the love (,) and this is the time to spread love and joy,” Flav added.

He then spoke about not wanting to take away from “everyone’s hard work” at the Rockefeller Center Christmas event and praised Jennifer Hudson’s performance before turning his attention to the Backstreet Boys.

“I stayed and watched the Backstreet Boys from the stage just as it started snowing (,) and I have to say that Howie D is one of the nicest guys in the music industry,” Flav continued. “Really good people, you know (,) and if you don’t catch us on the front road (,), catch us on the back road (!!)”

PEOPLE has reached out to NBC for comment.

The special, which aired live on December 4, was hosted by Kelly Clarkson and featured appearances by Todayinclude Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Al Roker and Craig Melvin as well as other well-known NBC faces.

Although the boy band hasn’t responded on social media or made a statement about the incident, Flav said of X, “They stood up for me (.) They definitely did.”

Meanwhile, during the Summer Olympics in Paris, Flav became one of the games’ breakout stars after sponsoring the U.S. women’s water polo team. The hype man even appeared in person at the Paris aquatic center to cheer on the athletes.

He later reunited with members of the team in Las Vegas to celebrate their continued relationship. The rapper also surprised her with a Virgin Voyage cruise and a $1,000 bonus.

Elsewhere during the Games, Flav also vowed to help track and field athlete Veronica Fraley – who competed for the USA in the discus – by paying the rest of her rent after she revealed she was unable to do so. The rapper, known for his signature watch accessories, also offered to replace gymnast Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal with a “bronze medal watch.”
