Florida map shows counties with temperatures below freezing

There are multiple freeze warnings in place for at least nine Florida counties as the Sunshine State continues to experience temperatures as high as 31°F.

A polar cold front is sweeping across Florida this December and the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued freeze warnings for portions of northeast and north-central Florida. This includes areas in Suwannee, Columbia, Alachua, Marion, Taylor, Duval, Putnam and Nassau counties.

An advisory for western Putnam and central and western Marion counties is in effect until 9:00 a.m. EST Monday, and another is in effect for those areas on Tuesday from 1:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. EST. Freezing temperatures as low as 32F and 31F are expected.

“Take measures to protect young children, the elderly and the homeless,” the NWS office in Jacksonville said, adding: “To prevent water pipes from freezing, wrap, drain or leave them drain slowly. Take steps now to protect sensitive plants from freezing cold.”

Coastal Nassau and East Marion counties have a separate freeze advisory in effect for the same periods.

In the coastal Levy and inland Citrus counties, temperatures are expected to drop to 33°F. “Frost could damage sensitive outdoor plants,” the NWS Tampa Bay office told Ruskin. “Susceptible outdoor plants could die if not covered.” These locations are under an advisory until 9 a.m. EST Monday.

Meanwhile, inland Levy County, temperatures are expected to drop to 31 F. A warning is in effect from 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. EST on Monday. “Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor utilities,” the NWS Tampa Bay office told Ruskin.

There are also multiple frost warnings in place – in many of the counties already affected by frost warnings, but also in Clay, Flagler and St. Johns counties.

A freeze warning is issued when “significant, widespread freezing temperatures are expected” and a freeze warning is used “when the minimum temperature on clear and calm nights during the growing season is expected to be 33 to 36 degrees,” according to the NWS.

Despite these cold temperatures, it doesn’t look like it will snow in Florida as dry air is expected to prevail and move in behind the cold fronts.

“Right now there is no chance of snow here over the holiday weekend and into the first week of December,” said David Reese, a meteorologist with the NWS in Tallahassee USA today.

“Very dry air is coming in behind the fronts. There will be some moisture as the front passes through.”

Newsweek The NWS emailed for comment.
