Former child star Rory Sykes has died in LA fires

Rory Sykes, a former child star who was blind and suffered from cerebral palsy, has died in the Los Angeles wildfires, his mother said.

The British-born Australian citizen appeared on a British television show Kiddy Kapers in the 1990s.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes in the Malibu fires yesterday. I am completely heartbroken,” his mother Shelley Sykes wrote on social media.

Ms Sykes traveled to her local fire station after struggling to reach emergency services and remove her 32-year-old son Rory from his self-contained holiday home next to her property while the area was engulfed in flames.

“He was my baby and he died unnecessarily,” she told the Australian television news show 10 messages first.

“Guess what didn’t work, 911. All the phone lines were down,” she said.

“He said, ‘Mom, leave me,’ and no mother can leave her child, and I have a broken arm. I couldn’t lift him. I couldn’t move him.”

The news report said she drove 400 meters to her local fire station to ask for help, whereupon she was told they had “no water”, Ms Sykes claimed.

“When the fire department brought me back, his house burned to the ground,” she added.

Ms Sykes said her son died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to US reports, the Las Virgenes municipal water company disputed their claims, saying that “water supply to their property and the entire surrounding community remained available and uninterrupted.”
