Former Michigan State star who excels in a huge area

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed has quietly established himself as one of the NFL’s top up-and-coming playmakers.

Entering his rookie season last year, he didn’t have the same stature as teammate Christian Watson, but it’s pretty safe to say he’s passed Watson on Green Bay’s formidable totem pole of pass catchers.

Reed caught 64 passes for 793 yards and eight touchdowns last season, and in 15 games this year, the former Michigan State Spartans star has 52 receptions for 803 yards and six scores.

But there is one particular area in which Reed has been successful particularly highlighted in 2024: explosive games.

During his debut season, the 24-year-old averaged 12.4 yards per catch. Not terrible, but certainly not great either.

Well, this season, that number has increased to 15.4 yards per reception, which is eighth in the NFL.

For example, in the Packers’ stunning win over the New Orleans Saints last Sunday, Reed recorded three catches for 76 yards. That equates to an average range of 25.3 yards per grab.

Reed had four games this year where he averaged over 20 yards per catch. He matched his record again in Week 1 when he caught four balls for 138 yards and a score. He averaged an incredible 34.5 yards per reception in that game.

While the Michigan State product isn’t exactly Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase, he appears to be in it to establish yourself as the No. 1 receiver.

Remember: Reed is battling considerable talent in Green Bay’s receiving corps, as Watson, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks are all present. Heck, throw tight end Tucker Kraft into the mix too.

The fact that Reed was able to remain so productive despite battling for scoring with so many other pass-catchers shows how great he was with the Packers, especially so early in his pro career.

During his three seasons at East Lansing between 2020 and 2022, Reed collected 147 receptions for 2,069 yards and 18 touchdowns.
