Former Steelers cornerback comes out of retirement and signs with Super Bowl contender

During the offseason, former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson retired from the NFL. But as it turned out, that retirement was short-lived after he signed with a Super Bowl contender on Monday.

According to the team, Nelson signed with the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad on Monday. This will be his second stint with the team after they drafted him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Nelson spent the first four years of his career with the Chiefs before playing for the Steelers from 2019-2020. Nelson recorded three interceptions, 17 passes defensed and two fumble recoveries in 30 games in Pittsburgh over two years.

However, Nelson suffered a cap sacrifice in 2021, something he expressed frustration about in an episode of his podcast.

“Going into my senior year, my cap number is high,” he said. “These moms felt the need to call me during the offseason, literally the day before free agency. That was Mike (Tomlin) and he kind of called me, like, ‘Hey Steve, me.’ “Think upstairs, you want to trade them.” Get out of here, man, eh? I didn’t like that because if you guys thought that, you should have gotten me in free agency in time.”

After his days in Pittsburgh were over, Nelson was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 and then to the Houston Texans in 2022 and 2023. Last season, Nelson had four interceptions and 12 passes defended with the Texans.

Assuming he stays with Kansas City and has a role, Nelson could get another chance to face his former team when the Steelers face the Chiefs in Week 17.
