Former Texas Longhorn star arrives at NFL game wearing Texas Tech jersey

While the first round of the College Football Playoff will make up the lion’s share of sports headlines today, the NFL is also in action with two big matchups. In one of those games, the Kansas City Chiefs and former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II will face the Houston Texans at noon Central.

A member of the Chiefs caused a stir when he wore a Texas Tech jersey upon his arrival at the stadium in Kansas City, and it wasn’t Mahomes or his best friend, tight end Travis Kelce. Rather, former Texas Longhorns star Xavier Worthy appeared in one of the Mahomes-branded galvanized gray jerseys that Tech wore against Colorado last month.

Of course, Worthy wore Mahomes’ old college number, No. 5. That sparked a big reaction from Texas Tech fans on social media.

It’s interesting that Worthy chose Mahomes’ Texas Tech jersey on the same day that his alma mater hosts Clemson in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Perhaps this was an attempt to curry favor with Mahomes before the game, hoping Mahomes would get the ball to Worth early and often against the Texans.

As a rookie this season, Worthy was the No. 1 overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in this year’s NFL Draft. The No. 28 overall pick, he entered the season with high expectations, especially after running the fastest 40-yard dash time in NFL Combine history.

However, there was a bit of a learning curve for Worthy. In 14 games so far, he has caught 44 passes for 494 yards and four touchdowns (he is second on the team in both receiving yards and TD catches) while running 15 times for 84 yards and three more scores.

However, he didn’t exactly set the NFL on fire like some thought. In fact, the Chiefs’ entire offense this season has been something of a disappointment.

Still, Worthy has helped the Chiefs to an NFL-best 13-1 record. Of course, he wants to be a big part of another win on Saturday, and perhaps he wanted to send a message to his starting quarterback by wearing a Mahomes-branded jersey when he arrived for pregame warmups. Finally, it’s always a good idea to be on your quarterback’s good side, especially if you’re a rookie wide receiver.
