Steven Abreu, a former Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputy, was convicted of 29 counts, including first-degree rape and multiple counts of second-degree rape.

Former Wicomico sheriff’s deputy guilty of 29 counts, including rape

On December 6, 2024, after a five-day jury trial before S. James Sarbanes, District Court Judge for Wicomico County, Steven Victor Abreu, 32, of Salisbury, Maryland, was convicted of 29 counts, including first count of rape and multiple counts of rape second degree, third and fourth degree sexual offenses, misconduct in office, false imprisonment and unlawful sexual conduct by a police officer.

These crimes occurred while he was working as a deputy in the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office. Abreu was fired from the sheriff’s office when these crimes came to light in 2022.

Sentencing was deferred pending the completion of a pre-sentence investigation report and psychological evaluation. Abreu was remanded to the Wicomico County Detention Center pending sentencing.

What happened to Abreu in the 2022 case?

Abreu’s crimes came to light in October 2022 when a woman reported that he held her down in a parking lot and sexually assaulted her. The investigation revealed additional crimes – in one case, Abreu offered a woman a ride in his patrol car before sexually assaulting her, and in another case, he returned to the home of a woman he had had contact with during a 911 call earlier in the day Under the pretext of sending her an information brochure about the victim, he sexually assaulted her.

A fourth woman was stopped on her way home by Abreu, but managed to escape when a neighbor approached and asked if everything was OK.
