Fox News Channel dominates cable news, while CNN and MSNBC plummet to embarrassing weekly lows

Fox News Channel dominated cable news last week, averaging 1.4 million daily viewers and two million in prime time, while MSNBC and CNN executives didn’t have much to be thankful for as both networks hit a raft of historic lows in viewership.

CNN had its lowest ratings since June 2001 during the week of November 25, averaging just 268,000 viewers, compared to Fox News’ 1.4 million.

MSNBC averaged 346,000 total viewers, surpassing CNN in this category despite dramatic ratings on other metrics. It was similar in prime time, as MSNBC averaged 465,000 total viewers, while CNN only drew 297,000, as both networks had less than half of Fox News’ viewers combined.

Despite a busy news cycle, CNN had a smaller average audience from 8 to 11 p.m. than 29 other cable networks, including Bravo, TV Land, Freeform Investigation Discovery, FX, Food Network and History.

Since President-elect Donald Trump’s victory on Election Day, Fox News has captured 73% of the cable news audience in prime time, while MSNBC and CNN have seen viewers tune out of the news.

CNN had its lowest ratings week in nearly 30 years in the key 25- to 54-year-old demographic, averaging a dismal 41,000 viewers from the group coveted by advertisers. But MSNBC performed even worse in the critical category, averaging just 29,000 daily viewers in the demo.

MSNBC had a smaller audience in the demo than 36 other cable networks, including Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, E!, The Cartoon Network, Oxygen, MTV, Hallmark Mystery and two Lifetime networks. For MSNBC, it was the worst demo week since November 1997.

Fox News thrived while CNN and MSNBC struggled, resulting in FNC garnering the highest share of the cable news audience and among the top viewers in the network’s history, with an average audience of 163,000 viewers ages 25 to 54, which corresponds to an incredible 70%.

During prime time, Fox News averaged 237,000 demo viewers, compared to just 51,000 for CNN, which ranked behind 33 other cable networks.

MSNBC only managed 37,000 average primetime demo viewers and ranked 43rd among cable networks. It was MSNBC’s lowest-rated week in this category since December 1997.

“Special Report with Bret Baier,” “The Ingraham Angle,” “Jesse Watters Primetime,” “Hannity,” “Gutfeld!” and “FOX News @ Night” also had dominant weeks, as Fox News was home to 98 of them 100 Best Cable News Shows of the Week.

“Outnumbered,” Martha MacCallum’s “The Story,” “The Faulkner Focus,” “America’s Newsroom” with Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino, and “America Reports” with John Roberts and Sandra Smith contributed to Fox News’ daytime coverage In addition, many broadcast competitors outperformed MSNBC and CNN offerings.

“Cavuto Live” became cable’s most-watched show on Saturday, averaging 1.3 million viewers, and “Sunday Morning Futures” took the top spot over the weekend, averaging 1.8 million viewers.

For the week, Fox News outperformed CNN by 407% in total daytime viewers and 577% in primetime viewers and beat MSNBC by 293% in total daytime viewers and 334% in primetime viewers.
