Friday snowstorm in Mass. How much do we get? – NBC Boston

Enjoy the sun this Thursday! Why, you ask? Heading into the weekend we’re expecting cloudy, cold weather with some snow!

There will be plenty of sunshine mixed with clouds on Thursday. High temperatures will be in the mid 40s. Low temperatures will drop to near freezing overnight.

Now let’s talk about some snow!

Our focus was on a storm developing far offshore that initially seemed too far away to attract much attention. But now it looks like its presence alone will distort the weather and produce a few showers early Friday.

The problem is that colder air moves in throughout the day, starting in southern New Hampshire, across the South Coast to Cape Cod, late in the day and in the evening. So initially we will be in good shape as it will be mostly rain (and snow that will melt as it falls) but as the cold sets in there will be gradual snowfall and the roads could become slippery during and after the evening drive.

We are seeing some spots in the 1- to 3-inch range offshore and closer to shore closer to a coating of up to 1 inch. In a winter where there is a lot of snow, this is almost unnoticeable, but in a winter where there is not much snow – and which coincides with the holiday wave – this will surprise some.

There is still some uncertainty in this forecast, largely due to the path of the storm. As low pressure moves further east off our coast, there is a greater chance of snow, even on the Cape and Islands. However, if the low extends further west toward our coast, our snow potential would decrease significantly and we could end up getting more rain.

The way we see it, we can see up to 5 cm of snow in spots between a layer. The forecast could and will change. Stay with us for updates.

A few flurries are possible Saturday, but there will be plenty of clouds and very cold weather for most of the day. In fact, highs will be near freezing. Low temperatures will drop into the teens. Wind chill values are in the single digits.

An intensifying cold weather outbreak will begin from Canada on Sunday, giving way to highs in the mid 20s and lows in the teens! Bundle.

Looking ahead to Christmas Day, some of us could see a mix of rain and snow. It is still too early to talk about possible accumulations. Morning temperatures will be in the upper 20s. Highs will be in the upper 30s.
