Fulham 2-1 Chelsea (December 26, 2024) Match analysis

Leaders Chelsea lost to neighbors Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, losing 2-1 in the Premier League on Thursday thanks to substitute Rodrigo Muniz’s 95th-minute winner.

It was Fulham’s first win at Stamford Bridge since 1979 and dented second-placed Chelsea’s title hopes as the hosts remain on 35 points, four points off the pace, having played two games more than leaders Liverpool, who later hosts Leicester City.

Chelsea took the lead after 16 minutes when Cole Palmer danced past two defenders and slotted the ball through Issa Diop’s legs into the bottom corner for a superb goal.

Chelsea seemed to be in control. Palmer had two more shots on goal and Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno was called into action with a sharp save from a diving header from Marc Cucurella.

He also tipped over a rocket from captain Enzo Fernández at the start of the second half.

Rodrigo Muniz celebrated wildly after giving Fulham their first away win at Chelsea since 1979.

But Fulham, who last scored a league goal at Stamford Bridge in 2011, showed renewed energy and determination as Chelsea pulled back to defend their lead.

That paid off in the 82nd minute when Harry Wilson headed the ball from close range.

Muniz claimed all three points when he intercepted a pass from Sasa Lukic in the final moments of the game, lifting Fulham to eighth place with 28 points from 18 games.

The final stats showed they deserved to win, with 26 touches of the ball in the opposition penalty area compared to Chelsea’s 20, more than 52% possession and 14 shots compared to the home team’s 12.

It was Chelsea’s first league defeat since a 2-1 loss to Liverpool on October 20 and they are in danger of being overtaken by two points by Arsenal, who play weak Ipswich Town on Friday.
