Further severe storms are expected this evening

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – After a soggy round of rain in the morning, we’re looking towards the evening where another round of severe weather is expected to impact our region.

WEATHER WARNING DAY: TONIGHT

Although we’ve already had plenty of rain from this morning’s storms, the worst is yet to come. We expect another round of rain and storms during the evening hours of Saturday, possibly into the early hours of Sunday morning. This weather will impact our westernmost counties around 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. before reaching the meridian area around 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. All types of severe weather are on the table, with strong winds exceeding 65 mph, heavy rain, the threat of damaging hail and the threat of severe tornadoes (EF2 or higher).

Fortunately this threat disappears towards the end of the night and into the early hours of Sunday morning and once we are behind the main line the threat diminishes significantly.

Sunday itself will be much quieter, with highs in the 60s and partly cloudy, clearing skies. Monday and Tuesday both follow a similar trend with highs in the mid 60s, but a cold front overnight between Monday and Tuesday could bring some showers into early Tuesday morning.

Looking ahead: New Year

New Year’s Day will be MUCH cooler. This cold front will bring in a lot of cool, dry air during the overnight hours Tuesday through Wednesday, causing high temperatures and humidity to drop. On Wednesday and Thursday, highs will only rise into the mid-50s under sunny skies.

Late week weather will keep us in the mid to upper 50s with mostly sunny skies through next weekend.
