Future Hall of Fame WR Mike Evans sparks statement win over Chargers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers put on a show against the NFL’s top-scoring defense at SoFi Stadium. The Buccaneers dominated the Chargers 40-17 and totaled 506 net yards, including 223 on the ground. Mike Evans, a future Hall of Fame receiver, delivered a top-notch performance against the Chargers.

Evans rushed for a season-high 159 yards and scored two touchdowns. His 23 regular season games with multiple touchdown receptions are the seventh most in NFL history. According to Next Gen Stats, Evans’ 34 deep touchdown receptions (over 20 air yards) since 2016 are fewer than only Tyreek Hill (42).

Late in the third quarter, Evans caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield. He used a subtle maneuver to score inside against Kristian Fulton and give Tampa Bay a 30-17 lead. He scored his first goal early in the quarter when the Bucs trailed by four. Mayfield rolled left out of the pocket to avoid the pressure and found Evans on the sideline, who continued to run to stay in the quarterback’s line of sight. No. 13 quickly accelerated for a 54-yard score, sending the Bucs fans in attendance to their feet.

“Today we played almost the entire game except for a few turnovers,” said Evans. “I should have run a better route on the in-cut, but other than that we really got everything we wanted today. We were physical, running the ball and making plays on the field… I started early. He (Mayfield) did it. “I looked for myself and we had a really good game plan and a really big focus for this week. We knew what kind of game it was going to be and we came and delivered.

The A&M product spurred offensive production in Week 15 and sparked the Air Raid. In the fourth quarter, he worked his way inside off a screen to attack leverage and gained 23 yards. As one of the most underrated, yet most successful receivers in NFL history, Evans has once again made a name for himself among the hashtags. He showcased his elite catch radius, great speed and talent for separation and physicality at the catch point.
