Game Preview: Avalanche looks to eliminate the Penguins in the final game of their road trip

The Colorado Avalanche face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final game of an eight-day road trip. The Avalanche are 16-13-0 and have won three of their four road games this season and are aiming for a 4-1-0 record.

Although goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood was added to the Avalanche roster in a trade yesterday, he will not be joining the team in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Scott Wedgewood will hold the crease, followed by Trent Miner (called up from the Colorado Eagles) at the back.

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed this morning that Tristan Jarry will start in goal at the other end of the ice.

A huge milestone

Winger Mikko Rantanen will play his 600th career game on Tuesday evening. In ten seasons with the Avalanche, he collected a total of 654 points (277 goals, 377 assists). This season alone he has scored 15 goals and 22 assists. The team currently leads the team in goals scored this season, with the next player on the list being Nathan MacKinnon with nine.

Rantanen also ranks second on the team in points and third in assists. He also leads the team in power play goals.

How the momentum continues…

Head coach Jared Bednar mentioned that Sunday’s game against the New Jersey Devils was, in his opinion, their best game of the season defensively.

“I felt like we looked really organized and disciplined and had the puck early. We play a really good offensive team there, and I felt like we made it difficult for them to generate speed and get everyone on open ice. “At the time, it looked like we were really organized defensively . That was my problem in our game the other day in Detroit and I felt like we took another step forward. That side of it is definitely on display tonight.

Injury issues throughout the lineup have made it difficult for this team to play consistently all season, not to mention inconsistencies in goaltending. With Scott Wedgewood, a goalkeeper who put in an impressive performance on Sunday night, the team was able to put together an incredible performance against the fifth place team in the league. Calvin de Haan was the only defenseman to appear on the scoresheet, but Cale Makar and Devon Toews struggled with blocked shots. MacKinnon’s team also did a fantastic job of getting ahead of pucks in the defensive zone, something they have struggled with in recent games.

A team debut

Winger Givani Smith, part of the trade return that sent Georgiev to the Sharks, will make his debut with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.

Smith is considered an enforcer, and although he hasn’t scored any points in the six games he’s played for the Sharks this season, he will add much-needed bite and physicality to Colorado’s fourth line.

Where/How to see:
