Kentucky basketball makes two big runs to Colgate victory, rival Louisville awaits next

LEXINGTON – Kentucky basketball player Ansley Almonor said he and his teammates learned something about themselves in last week’s overtime win over Gonzaga, when UK overcame a 16-point halftime deficit.

“We’re tough,” said Almonor, a senior who transferred to Kentucky after three seasons at Fairleigh Dickinson. “We are a really resilient group. Trailing by 16 points (at halftime) and 18 in the second half, most teams would simply collapse and give up at that point. But we are an experienced team and we knew we were better. “We just had to go out and execute the game plan.

“And that’s exactly what we did.”

That’s not all the Wildcats have proven in Brandon Garrison’s eyes.

“(We) just keep showing that Kentucky basketball is back,” said Garrison, a second-year forward, “and just continue to shock everyone in the world who doubted us from the start.”

Kentucky, now ranked No. 5 in both major polls in Mark Pope’s first season, likely won’t be able to silence any remaining doubters tonight as it hosts a Colgate club that’s just 2-8.

But that’s not the point, Almonor said.

“Coach tries to preach to us every day: ‘It’s not about winning or losing for us. For us it’s about getting better every day. So as long as we keep getting better every day, we will end up where we want to end up. ‘” Almonor said. “Obviously (last) week was a big week for us. (We won a) big victory.”

“But every day we try to get better and today is another part of that.”

The Wildcats held off a feisty Raiders squad and won by 11 points.

Koby Brea had 17 points to lead Kentucky. Parker Jones had 17 for Colgate to tie Brea for the game-high.

A 3 at the buzzer from Colgate’s Parker Jones cut Kentucky’s halftime lead to two points, 38-36.

It was a disappointing end to the half for the Wildcats, who took an early 17-0 lead.

Kentucky is shooting 37.1% (13 for 35) from the field and is just 4 of 15 (26.7%) from behind the 3-point line. Koby Brea made all four of his 3-point attempts; the rest of the Wildcats are 0-for-11.

The Raiders are 14 of 34 (41.2%) from the field, 8 of 19 (42.1%) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Brea’s 12 points led all scorers in the first 20 minutes.

Jones leads Colgate with nine points.

At the U8 timeout, Kentucky leads Colgate 25-16.

The Wildcats scored the first 17 points of the contest before the Raiders went on an 11-0 run.

It is the third different line-up Great Britain have had this season. Lamont Butler started the first eight games at point guard. After Butler suffered an injury, fifth-year classmate Kerr Kriisa started against Gonzaga; Kriisa is now also out due to injury and moves Brea into the starting line-up.

Butler is averaging 3.9 assists and a team-best 12.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 22 minutes per game this season.

Colgate posted a 25-10 record overall last season and a 16-2 record in the Patriot League. The season ended with a 92-67 loss to Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Raiders are 2-8 this season. Their only wins came against SUNY Canton and UNC Wilmington, respectively; Their losses come to Drexel, Syracuse, NC State, Harvard, Appalachian State, Sam Houston State, Cornell and Northeastern.
