Georgia and Georgia Tech nearly broke Penn State’s overtime record

While it may not be one of the most famous moments in Penn State history, the Nittany Lions hold one of the most ridiculous records in college football. And after a rivalry matchup between Georgia and Georgia Tech on Friday night, that record stands.

Georgia and Georgia Tech played an eight-overtime game in which the Bulldogs came back from a 17-0 deficit to claim a wild 44-42 win. After a defensive stop on Georgia Tech’s two-point attempt early in the eighth overtime just after midnight, Georgia secured the victory when freshman running back Nate Frazier powered his way up the middle of the field for a short game-winning run. As a result, Penn State’s record for most overtime periods played remained unmatched.

Penn State lost a game in nine overtimes to Illinois in 2021 by a score of 20-18. Needless to say, this game was far less entertaining than what transpired in Athens, Georgia on Black Friday. Georga and Georgia Tech each individually surpassed the Penn State-Illinois debacle at the end of the first overtime, with the score tied at 40-40 by the third overtime.

The game between Georgia and Georgia Tech became the longest game in SEC history after it went into the eighth overtime. Of course, it was the previous SEC record holder for most overtimes that led to college football’s revised overtime rules. LSU and Texas A&M played a grueling seven-overtime game under the old overtime rules in 2018, which led to the NCAA Rules Committee switching to the 2-point try model entering the third overtime.

Penn State could potentially face Georgia in the upcoming College Football Playoff. However, Georgia’s win last night may have been enough to secure a spot in the 12-team field regardless of what they do in the SEC Championship Game next week (Georgia plays the winner of Texas in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday. Texas A&M game). The Bulldogs have already suffered two defeats. A third loss could raise some questions locally for Georgia, depending on what else happens in the country this week and next.

However, Penn State has its own work to do today. Penn State hosts Maryland and likely has a chance to secure a home playoff game in the first round. And if Michigan somehow gets some big help, Penn State could play Oregon next week for the Big Ten title.
