Georgia Power Receives Approval for 500 MW BESS Projects

This followed news in August that Georgia Power had submitted an update to the company’s 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) that raised renewable energy and storage targets, including the bid for the BESS projects.

The details of the four Georgia Power BESS projects:

name Location MW/MWh Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies. Project type Commercial Operational Date (COD)

In the order granting certification for the four projects, the operating costs were classified as trade secrets at the time of publication. However, the utility is required to submit quarterly reports to the PSC while the BESS is under construction.

In November, Georgia Power completed the 65 MW/260 MWh Mossy Branch Battery Facility project. This was the first BESS that the company built to own and operate.

The EPC for Mossy Branch was Finland-based systems integrator and BESS manufacturer Wärtsilä. The company also acted as a BESS equipment supplier.

Georgia Power also entered into an energy storage capacity agreement in 2022 with developer RWE Hickory Park’s 196 MW solar PV and 40 MW/80 MWh battery storage project in Mitchell County, Georgia.
