DALLAS – The Yankees added another star to their rotation, agreeing to a massive free-agent contract with lefty Max Fried at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Fried’s eight-year, $218 million contract – subject to completion – is the highest MLB payout to a left-handed pitcher and does not include buyouts or deferred funds.

Here are a few things you should know about the newest Yankee:

The Big Three

Fried, 30, was teammates at Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles with two other big league pitchers – Lucas Giolito and Jack Flaherty.

All three were first-round MLB draft picks.

Fried was selected seventh overall by the San Diego Padres in 2012, the same year Giolito was taken 16th^Th overall to the Washington Nationals.

Flaherty was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals, 34^Th total (supplementary) in 2014.

A wide arsenal

Fried throws seven different pitches, according to MLB Statcast, led by a 94 mph four-seam fastball and a big curveball — a pitch that held batters to a .154 average in 2024.

He also throws a sinker, changeup, two versions of the slider and a cutter.

Fried was a master at inducing soft contact, missing barrels and high groundball rates.

Traded once

As a minor league player, Fried was signed to a five-player contract prior to the 2015 season that sent him from the Padres to the Atlanta Braves. In this trade, the Padres netted Justin Upton.

Injury history

Fried landed on the injured list shortly after pitching in that year’s All-Star Game due to left forearm inflammation. He still made 29 starts in 2024.
