Get wind of it! The highest gust of wind will blow over the foothills of the Front Range

DENVER – If you were awake late Wednesday night, you may have noticed that it was very windy. However, people in Clear Creek County certainly noticed, as those wind gusts likely knocked out power to around 5,000 customers.

The National Weather Service in Boulder counted these wind reports early Thursday, and some of the highest wind gust speeds are impressive.

“Strong winds buffeted portions of the Front Range Mountains and Foothills last night, reaching speeds of over 80 miles per hour in several places and up to 102 miles per hour at one point in the foothills of Boulder County!” Read a news story , which the weather service posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Schools and government offices in Clear Creek County were closed Thursday due to a statewide outage likely caused by wind gusts of up to 67 mph or stronger.

According to the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, all homes, businesses, schools and government offices were affected. Deputies told residents early Thursday to expect delays and closures in the area, including Idaho Springs, Silver Plume, Russell Gulch, Empire, Dumont, Lawson, Georgetown and Central City.
