Giants’ Dexter Lawrence suffers a sprained elbow as the team’s miserable season continues

The New York Giants became the first NFL team to be eliminated from playoff contention on Thanksgiving this season, and that added insult to injury – or vice versa.

Star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence suffered a dislocated elbow during the team’s 27-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.

Lawrence was seen wearing a sling after the game, and Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Friday that it was a “long-term” scenario. Big Blue only has five games left this year.

Lawrence’s season ends with a career-best nine sacks, which currently ranks sixth in the NFL.

Lawrence had looked like another Dave Gettleman disaster in his first three seasons after the 19th pick in 2019, but he found a new groove with Daboll and was named second-team All-Pro in each of the last two seasons.

He finished ninth in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting last season.

The Giants have been plagued by injuries all season, as defensive lineman Kayvon Thibodeaux, linebacker Azeez Ojulari and offensive tackle Andrew Thomas all battled injuries. Even quarterback Tommy DeVito, who started in his first game of the season last Sunday, injured his forearm, keeping him out of the Thanksgiving matinee.

With the loss to the Cowboys, the Giants fell to 2-10 this season and are currently the No. 1 pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

Lawrence’s offseason now begins sooner than expected as he sets his sights on 2025 – and it’s likely the rest of the team is counting down the days until they get there, too.
