Golden Globe nominees Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo had a “very tearful” morning

They’ve held space together, and now they may be holding Golden Globes. Both Cynthia Erivo And Ariana Grande were honored for their work Evil on Monday from the awards show, with Erivo earning a nomination for best actress in a musical or comedy and Grande earning her first Globe nomination for best supporting actress in a motion picture. “It was a very tearful morning,” Grande said VF via Zoom. “I’m so grateful.”

Sitting in the backseat of a car next to her beloved dog Toulouse, Grande — appropriately dressed in a Shiz University sweatshirt — shared exactly what she did when she found out the good news. “I lay in bed and played Mario Party Jamboree“, she says VF. “Then my team called me and I was sobbing. And then my mother called me and we were both sobbing.”

While Grande was playing and crying in New York, Erivo was on the other side of the country getting some much-needed rest. “I literally got back from London last night. I was lying in my bed,” Erivo said in a separate call. “A phone rang at six in the morning or so. I turned around and looked and my phone went crazy. Many people had already written me messages. That’s how I found out.”

Of course, one of the first calls Erivo made was to her co-star. “I called her this morning. I said, ‘Hello, baby. Congratulations, Golden Globe nominees,” says Erivo. “I love that this is happening for her. I love that this is happening for us together. I love that we get to celebrate this together.” Grande is also excited to share her nomination with half of #Gelphie. “I’m so grateful and proud of the work that Cynthia and I have done together and separately,” says Grande, “but when it happens, it’s just extraordinary and I’m just incredibly emotional and grateful for the recognition.”

Erivo is something of a Golden Globes veteran herself, having been nominated four times in four different categories: Lead Actress in a Drama for Harriet (2020); Best Original Song for “Stand Up” by Harriet; Lead actress in the miniseries for the role of music legend Aretha Franklin genius (2022); and now starring in a musical/comedy where she plays the ultimate underdog Evil. “I don’t know why I didn’t put two and two together, but someone said, ‘This is your fourth nomination.’ I said, ‘Oh my God,’ which is wild, but they’re all for different things,” Erivo said. “That’s what makes my brain explode – being celebrated in every forum I go into feels really special.”

A music awards veteran, playing the wildly popular Upper Uplands native Galinda Upland marks Grande’s first Globe nomination and follows her first acting win for Best Supporting Actress – which she shared with her Emilia Perez‘S Zoe Saldana at the Astra Awards. The recognition for her first major film role leaves the pop star speechless. “I am at a loss for words. I’m really at a loss for words,” she says. “I’m trying to find them, but they seem to have escaped me.”

However, she quickly finds the words to thank someone important to her Evil Trip. “I want to call Nancy Banksmy acting coach, and wake her up and just cry,” she says. “I think of all those nights in our sweatpants, sitting on the floor with the scripts, reading between the lines and getting to know Glinda as best we could.”

For all the excitement and excitement, Erivo and Grande seem to be mostly grateful for how their film is being received. “I’ve never seen that before. I didn’t expect that,” Erivo said. “And then interviews come out. And then it’s the “Hold Space” and the Gay Men’s Chorus does a version of it. Seeing people get so excited and be so creative with something we can share with everyone is just wonderful.”
