“Gone Girl” kidnapper Matthew Muller was charged in 2009 home invasions in Mountain View, Palo Alto

The man convicted in connection with the 2015 kidnapping of Denise Huskins in Vallejo, California, is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara District Court on Monday to face new charges in a separate case.

Matthew Muller is currently serving a 40-year sentence in an Arizona prison for the rape and false imprisonment of Huskins, which police initially believed was a hoax.

Forensic DNA testing has now led to new charges in connection with a series of sexual assaults at homes in Mountain View and Palo Alto, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said.

What are the new allegations against Matthew Muller?

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office alleges Muller broke into women’s homes in Mountain View and Palo Alto. Muller is suspected of drugging both women and then sexually abusing them, prosecutors say.

Both attacks occurred just weeks apart in September and October in 2009 and remained unsolved.

Investigators initially identified Muller as a possible suspect in the Palo Alto case. However, investigators said they did not have enough evidence to charge him at this point.

Muller is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County Court on Monday at 1 p.m.

Real “Gone Girl” case

A native of the Sacramento area, Muller was convicted in 2022 of the 2015 kidnapping and rape of Vallejo resident Denise Huskins.

Police initially believed the disappearance was a hoax and accused Huskins’ boyfriend of being responsible, reminding many of the plot of the popular novel and film “Gone Girl.”

Eventually, however, Muller was linked to the case and arrested for both Huskins’ kidnapping and a house burglary in Dublin.

Huskins’ kidnapping received renewed interest in 2024 after the release of the Netflix documentary “American Nightmare” detailing the case.

Following the release of the documentary, the Vallejo Police Department also received renewed criticism for its handling of the case. The department had already been sued over its handling of the kidnapping.
