Good, bad and ugly after the Packers’ 27-25 loss to the Vikings in Week 17

The Green Bay Packers fell to 11-5 entering the final week of the season after losing 27-25 to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at US Bank Stadium.

The Packers took an early 3-0 lead but trailed by 10 at halftime and 17 twice in the second half before scoring 15 straight points in the fourth quarter, making the final few minutes interesting.

A pair of completions from Sam Darnold – who finished with a career-high 377 yards – sealed the deal on the final drive.

Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly from the Packers’ loss to the Vikings:

The good

The late fight: The Packers fell behind 20-3 and 27-10, but never failed. During a three-possession stretch, the Packers went touchdown-stopping with just over two minutes left to turn a 27-10 score into a 27-25 score. Unproductive for three quarters, Jordan Love completed 9 of 11 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. But it was too little, too late. The Packers couldn’t get another stop to give Love a chance to win on the final possession. The Packers can’t expect to sleep through three quarters and beat one of the best teams in the NFL, especially on the road.

The evil

The pass defense: The Packers allowed 33 completions and produced just one sack on 44 dropbacks by Sam Darnold, who devastated Green Bay’s injury-plagued pass defense. The Vikings quarterback consistently navigated the pocket and found big plays in the middle of the field. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Jalen Nailor combined for 19 catches, 242 yards and two touchdowns. The Packers finished the game with just five quarterback hits. Combined with a secondary that is missing two starters, a pass rush that struggles to break down the pocket, and a good pass offense like the Vikings will exploit every time.

The ugly

The second and third quarters: The Vikings dominated the middle quarter and outscored the Packers 27-7. Minnesota scored five goals in six possessions and gave up just seven points after Sam Darnold’s interception in the third quarter. The Packers gave up three points to the Vikings on a long field goal as time expired in the first half and then a touchdown early in the second half, turning a 10-3 game into a 20-3 deficit. Thanks to a big lead in the second and third quarters, the Vikings were able to survive a late surge.
