Google News’ new design simplifies the bottom bar on Android

Like other first-party apps this year, a small redesign of Google News on Android simplifies the bottom bar.

Previously, Google News had four tabs for all customers: For You, Headlines, Following, and Newsstand.

The first two sections have now been combined into a new “Home” tab that continues to display “For You” as the default content feed. A category carousel below the app bar gives you access to: Headlines, Local, US, World, Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Science and Health. This was previously on the Headlines tab.

Old vs. new

Instead of an underline, the carousel uses a chip design to note which feed you’re currently viewing. While this step impacts one-handed accessibility, it simplifies overall navigation.

Google News isn’t the only one that’s gone from four tabs to three in the last few months, which I think looks nicer, if not more elegant, for Material You. There’s also Google Photos (on iOS) and Google Maps.

This straightforward redesign of Google News is rolling out to Android following a server-side update with version 5.120.x. It is not yet available on iOS. There is no dynamic color design as the blue accent color is still used.

The last major update to Google News introduced a customizable “Following” feed for sources you curate.
