Google Street View may have just helped police solve a murder

A Google Street View camera image showing a person loading a large white bag into the trunk of a car has helped Spanish police arrest two people after a man went missing.

On Wednesday, December 18, the Spanish National Police confirmed that officers had arrested a man and a woman on November 12 in Soria province, according to a translated press release.

Authorities confirmed the arrests came after a relative reported an unnamed man missing in November 2023 after receiving “suspicious” messages from him.

“The officers traveled to two towns in Soria, where they arrested a woman, the partner of the missing person, and a man, who had been the partner of the detainee, as suspected perpetrators of a crime of illegal detention caused by the failure to provide information about the person’s whereabouts were tightened “The missing person,” police said, according to the translated press release.

The update comes after a Google Street View image captured in the city of Tajueco in October 2023 shows a man loading a large white bag into the trunk of a red car on a quiet street.

The two people arrested were reportedly accused of “killing and dismembering a Cuban,” according to a Spanish media El Pais.

“Subsequently, with the necessary court authorizations, two raids and searches were carried out in the homes of both detainees, as well as a technical police visual inspection of the detainees’ vehicles, during which it was possible to find elements relevant to the investigation,” the police said.

“In addition, investigators had some images they discovered during the investigation where they discovered a vehicle in a location tracking application that could have been used in the course of the crime,” they added.

Police said the images found online were “one of the clues” that helped investigators “solve the crime.”

A second Google Maps image reportedly showed a “blurred silhouette of someone” “carrying a large white bundle on a wheelbarrow.” El Pais reported.

Police confirmed the man had been reported missing by a relative after they received “suspicious” messages. Although the two were “close,” the person said he hadn’t heard from the missing man in “some time.”

“The complainant stated that he received a series of messages from the missing man’s phone in which he informed him that he had met a girl, that he was leaving Soria and that he was getting rid of the phone,” it said the message from the police.

“All this led the complainant to suspect that the messages had not been sent by the missing man and decided to report this to the National Police,” it added.
