Grandmother shoots, kills granddaughter at Buckeye home, police say

BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) — Police say a woman is dead after she was shot by her grandmother at a Buckeye home Sunday evening.

Around 4 p.m., officers responded to a home near 254th Ave and Maricopa Road after receiving a commotion call on the other end. According to Buckeye Police, the caller was heard saying that someone had been shot.

When police arrived, they found a woman in her early 30s inside the home who had been shot. They attempted life-saving measures, but she died at the scene.

Officers also found a woman in her 70s inside with a gun nearby. She was taken into custody.

The suspect was the victim’s grandmother, according to Buckeye PIO Carissa Planalp. The victim’s mother, who was home at the time of the shooting, suffered from shortness of breath and was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

“This situation is incredibly emotional for the family involved. It’s incredibly emotional for the community, the neighbors here tonight and it’s very emotional for the first responders who did everything they could tonight to try to save this young woman’s life. Unfortunately, they just weren’t successful,” said Planalp.

Details are limited. Police are asking the community to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
