Greene promises bill to rename Gulf of Mexico ‘as soon as possible’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has promised to introduce a bill “as soon as possible” to support President-elect Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

In an online post, Greene posted a video in which Trump floated the idea of renaming the body of water the “Gulf of America.”

“President @realDonaldTrump’s second term is off to a great start,” the Georgia Republican said. “I will introduce legislation as soon as possible to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”

Earlier Tuesday, Trump told reporters he wanted to change the Gulf’s name as he criticized Mexico for taking advantage of the U.S. on trade and immigration issues.

“We will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” the president-elect said. “What a beautiful name. And it is appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico must stop allowing millions of people to flow into our country.”

As Trump prepares for his second inauguration, he has begun fleshing out his economic agenda, including imposing additional tariffs. Late last year, he announced that a 25 percent tariff would be imposed on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.

Trump then met with outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation on Monday, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president-elect has repeatedly criticized Mexico, saying on Tuesday it was a “very dangerous place” controlled by cartels.

The president-elect also suggested Monday that the U.S. should merge with Canada following Trudeau’s exit, claiming there would be “no tariffs” and it would be safe from international threats. The pitch comes weeks after he trolled the prime minister by calling him the “governor” of Canada and joking that the country could be the 51st nation.
