Grizzlies star Ja Morant is out “week-to-week” with a right shoulder injury

Ja Morant’s recent shoulder injury will keep him off the floor indefinitely.

The Memphis Grizzlies star is out with a Grade 1 AC joint sprain in his right shoulder after going down in Friday’s win over the New Orleans Pelicans, the team confirmed Monday night. There is no timetable for his return, although Morant is now considered week-to-week.

Morant left Friday’s 132-124 win at the Smoothie King Center early after being hit hard by Pelicans center Daniel Theis. Morant went down hard, immediately rolled over in pain and pointed to his shoulder, initially drawing an offensive foul. However, this was overturned after a Pelicans challenge.

Morant finally got up from the floor and went to the locker room. He finished that win with 25 points and seven assists and then missed Sunday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Morant averaged 21.2 points and 7.9 assists per game with the Grizzlies this season. The 25-year-old missed most of last season, first due to a 25-game suspension stemming from a series of shootings and off-field incidents, and then due to a right shoulder injury that he sustained at the end contracted during training during the season. Morant had surgery in January to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, but he was cleared to return before the season began.

Morant has already missed 13 games this season due to various injuries, although the team has gone 8-5 without him. They will enter Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns with a record of 22-11.

While it sounds like Morant avoided the worst considering it was only a Grade 1 sprain, the re-injury of his shoulder, not quite a year after surgery, is a no-brainer for Grizzlies fans worrying. Given his recent history, expect Memphis to be extra cautious about his return in the coming weeks.
