Christmas falls on Wednesday December 25th this year. If the holiday surprises you, you are not alone. Thanksgiving landed late on the calendar this year, leaving less than four weeks between the two holidays, meaning there were fewer holiday shopping days than usual.

You can still pick up everything you need at these grocery stores that are open on Christmas Day.

Not surprisingly, almost all major retailers and grocers, including Walmart, Target, Aldi, Costco and Trader Joe’s, are closed for the holiday and will not reopen until Thursday morning, December 26th. But if you find yourself in a bind this year, some grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores will remain open. Please note that while these retailers are listed below, certain locations may be closed, have reduced hours, or have hours other than those listed. To check branch opening times, use the attached branch locator before you leave to ensure the doors will be open when you arrive on Christmas Day.

Grocery stores open on Christmas Day 2024

• Giant food: Many shops are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All pharmacies except Bethesda, Catonsville and Pikesville are closed. Select gas stations are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (if the host store is open). Giant Pickup is closed. You can find local opening times here.

The pharmacies will be open on Christmas Day 2024

• CVS: According to a CVS spokesperson, many CVS locations will be open during regular hours on Christmas. That said, “Some stores may be closed or have reduced hours.” With that in mind, CVS recommends that people call local stores or check store hours before visiting. • Walgreens: According to a Walgreens spokesperson, most Walgreens stores will be open on Christmas Day with adjusted hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Walgreens stores and 24-hour pharmacies will remain open 24 hours a day. You can find local opening times here.
