Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson: I’ve never seen “dysfunction” like Matt Eberflus’ mistake against the Lions

DETROIT – The Bears are once again a punchline, and the sports media world rejoiced at coach Matt Eberflus’ mismanagement at the end of their 23-20 loss to the Lions on Thursday.

As the clock expired and the Bears tried to tie or win the game, it ended with an incomplete pass from rookie quarterback Caleb Williams as time expired. Eberflus allowed the clock to run from 32 seconds to six seconds between plays and left the game with an unused timeout.

“In 70 years of coaching, I have never seen a dysfunction that cost a team a chance to win the game,” Johnson said on the Fox studio show after the game. “He has a rookie quarterback and different teams do it in different ways. I took care of clock management and timeouts. Sometimes the quarterback and the coach do it. Sometimes the coach has a trainer in the box to talk to him about time management.

“But when Eberflus saw that they were off course and there was a dysfunction, he should have taken a timeout.”

It was the Bears’ sixth straight loss, dropping them to 4-8 this season and Eberflus to 14-32 in his tenure.

For the Bears, explaining the confusing, mysterious ending to a frustrating loss doesn’t get any easier, no matter how many times they have to do it. “We keep coming back in these games and (have) time to actually win … and we just (bleep) the bed,” DJ Moore said.
