Hannah Kobayashi case: Family says search is far from over after LAPD says Maui woman entered Mexico voluntarily

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Family members of Hannah Kobayashi say they continue to search for the Hawaiian woman, even after LAPD investigators determined she left the country of her own volition and is not the victim of a crime.

On Monday, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said investigators had found videos and other evidence that Kobayashi entered Mexico on foot at the San Ysidro port of entry on Nov. 12. She was alone and there is no indication she was under duress or the victim of a crime, police said.

Kobayashi’s family has been searching for her since they lost contact with her shortly before that day. She flew from Maui to LAX on November 8th and was scheduled to take a connecting flight to New York, but missed that connection. Aside from a few cryptic text messages, they haven’t heard from her directly.

Police later said they believed she had intentionally missed the connecting flight. Days later, she picked up her luggage at LAX and used cash and her passport to buy a bus ticket to the border at Union Station before heading to Mexico.

“Our family remains hopeful that Hannah is safe and encourages everyone to continue the search,” the family said in a statement released by their attorney. “The search is far from over and we are committed to doing everything we can to bring her home safely.”

The family also thanked law enforcement for their investigation but urged them and the public to remain focused on finding her and avoid drawing speculative conclusions.

In the absence of evidence of a crime, the LAPD said it did not intend to continue investigating Mexico but expected to be notified when the country crossed the border and returned to the United States.

It was unclear whether her family planned to travel to Mexico to search for her. But they have changed her missing poster to English and Spanish with the new statement that she was last seen entering Mexico on November 12th.

I won’t stop until I know my niece is safe.

Larie Pidgeon, Hannah Kobayashi’s aunt

Hannah’s aunt Larie Pidgeon, who traveled to Los Angeles to help with the search, thanked the public for their help and support.

“I would like to thank the LAPD for their hard work and the resources they have dedicated to this search,” Pidgeon wrote. “I know they have worked tirelessly and their efforts have led us to this new piece of the puzzle.”

“But I also want to be clear: this search is not over. Knowing that Hannah has crossed the border does not provide the answers I need or ease the grief I feel.”

LAPD press conference on Hannah Kobayashi

Chief Jim McDonnell and other LAPD officials provide an update on the investigation into Hannah Kobayashi, the Hawaii woman reported missing in Los Angeles.

“However, my heart is still broken and my concern for Hannah has not subsided. It’s been 21 days since I last heard from her – 21 days of silence, fear and wondering what could have led to this. Hannah.” She never mentioned plans to travel to Mexico, and no one in her life knew she had any intention of going there. What concerns me even more is her complete disconnect from her phone, her social media, and her world – that is not who she is. And I can’t get rid of the recent messages she sent friends and family, which I’ve replayed in my head a thousand times, trying to understand it but I still can’t.

She added: “But I still need your help. Please continue to tell Hannah’s story. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers. I will not stop until I know my niece is safe and is doing this of her own volition and in a good state of mind.” Condition.

Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead in a parking lot near LAX last month. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be suicide.
