Hannah Kobayashi seen getting to Mexico on foot – NBC Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Police Department announced Monday that the case of Hannah Kobayashi, the Hawaii woman who disappeared after landing at LAX last month, is now a voluntary missing person case, saying its investigators have video evidence arrange for Kobayashi to cross the border into Mexico on foot.

Law enforcement sources had confirmed to NBC Los Angeles before the news conference that Kobayashi was believed to be in Mexico and there was no evidence of foul play in her disappearance.

“We have reviewed U.S. Customs and Border Protection video surveillance that clearly shows Kobayashi crossing the U.S. border on foot in New Mexico. She was alone with her luggage and appeared to be uninjured,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said during the press conference.

LAPD officers also confirmed that Kobayashi spoke alone through the tunnel at the San Ysidro port of entry.

“She is an adult and can choose to go missing,” a senior law enforcement official told NBCLA, adding that investigators still hoped Kobayashi would contact authorities so they could confirm she was safe and traveled of his own free will.

LAPD officials said border security video showed Kobayashi leaving the United States near Tijuana around 12:13 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, about a day after members of her family said they had last heard from her via text message.

There has been no confirmed communication with her since then and authorities suspected Kobayashi may have left her cellphone somewhere in Los Angeles.

It’s not clear why Kobayashi backed away from her original plans to visit New York and decided to cut off contact with some friends and family, but Chief McDonnell said the 30-year-old had previously expressed her desire “to be away from the modern day.” “to distance ourselves from connectivity”. “

Last week, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell publicly reiterated the department’s initial findings in its search for 30-year-old Kobayashi, that she had apparently decided to remain in Los Angeles on November 8 after her flight from Hawaii landed at LAX and she had failed to board the flight for the next leg of her planned trip to New York.

“The investigation determined it was intentional,” McDonnell told the Board of Police Commissioners.

McDonnell misstated that Kobayashi was 23 instead of 30, and members of Kobayashi’s family, who posted updates on a Facebook page, complained that they had not been contacted by the LAPD before McDonnell’s statement.

The Facebook page that focused on the search efforts has been removed.

On Sunday, November 24, police said they found Kobayashi’s father Ryan dead by suicide near LAX after he traveled from Hawaii to Los Angeles to help with search efforts.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Ryan Kobayashi was 58 years old and died as a result of multiple traumatic blunt force injuries.

Hannah Kobayashi’s family said they last had contact with her on Sunday, Nov. 10, when she said she returned to LAX to try to catch another flight to New York and family members described some of the text messages as “weird.” before contact is lost.

“Messages that said she didn’t feel safe, that she was worried about people stealing her money, and after those strange messages she went dark,” Kobayashi’s aunt, Laire Pidgeon, told NBCLA on November 19.

While she was in LA over the weekend, police tracked some of her movements and said she visited the Grove mall.

Kobayashi’s family members said they had seen security video that appeared to show them at a subway station near the Crypto.com Arena, saying at the time: “It is obvious that Hannah does not appear to be in good condition and she is not is alone.”
