Hannah Kobayashi, the missing 30-year-old woman from Hawaii who did not board her connecting flight to New York City and has not been heard from for nearly a month, was seen buying a ticket at Union Station in Los Angeles – before police said she traveled to Mexico voluntarily.

In one of the images, obtained by Fox affiliate KTTV, Kobayashi stands in front of a Union Station ticket booth buying a ticket to travel south and head to Mexico. In another, Kobayashi is seen walking around at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with her luggage and a phone.

During a press conference on Monday, December 2, the LAPD said that based on surveillance footage, Kobayashi crossed south of the border on November 12, a day after the missing woman’s family said her phone was the last one I rang the bell at LAX.

Authorities added that there is currently no evidence that Kobayashi is a victim of human trafficking or the victim of a crime.

“In addition, investigators determined that Kobayashi had expressed a desire to move away from modern connectivity prior to his departure from Maui,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said at the press conference.

LAPD Lt. Douglas Oldfield also told reporters that he believed Kobayashi’s desire to sever ties was based on authorities’ investigation of her past social media posts.

“We then saw indications that there were some desires or posts that were consistent with someone feeling the desire to disconnect from their phone,” Oldfield said, adding, “All we know is that they were using their phone didn’t have it after she left LAX.”

McDonnell said Kobayashi was alone with her luggage and “appeared unharmed.”

Her family tells PEOPLE they are still looking for answers and want to know where she is and that she is safe.

Kobayashi traveled from her home in Maui to New York City with a stop in Los Angeles. Her aunt, Larie Pidegeon, previously told PEOPLE that her niece got a job as a DJ photographer and created a detailed schedule.

Kobayashi flew from Maui to LAX on November 8th. However, she did not board her connecting plane to New York City.

“For unknown reasons, she decided not to board her pre-scheduled flight to New York,” the LAPD said in a statement. “While checking her luggage all the way to New York, she requested that her luggage be returned to LAX, where we have surveillance footage of her retrieving it from the baggage carousel on November 11th.”

Pidgeon had said that on November 11, Kobayashi’s relatives received cryptic text messages from their loved one saying, “I think someone is trying to steal my identity. I’m really scared.”

Based on additional investigation, authorities said Kobayashi “knowingly left” LAX and went to Union Station. At the transit hub, she used her passport to buy a bus ticket to a destination near the Mexican border.

Following the LAPD’s case update, Pidgeon told PEOPLE later on Tuesday, December 3, that Kobayashi never mentioned that she planned to travel to Mexico.

No one in her life knew she planned to go there,” Pidgeon said. “What concerns me even more is her complete disconnect from her phone, her social media and her world – that is not who she is. And I can’t get rid of the recent messages she sent to friends and family, which I’ve replayed in my head a thousand times, trying to understand but still haven’t.”

While searching for their loved one, the Kobayashi family also has to deal with the death of Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi. The 58-year-old was found dead in an LA parking lot on November 24 after traveling to California to help search for his daughter. His death was ruled a suicide.

“I am very sorry to the family for going through this ordeal,” LAPD Chief McDonnell said Dec. 2. “We are very sorry for their loss. And I don’t know how to put into words the feelings that they are going through during this very difficult time.”

McDonnell had a message for Kobayashi: “We urge Ms. Kobayashi to contact her family, law enforcement or U.S. Embassy personnel to let us know you are safe.”
