“Harlan Coben’s ‘Missing You’ Ending, Explained”

(Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for the finale of Miss you“chain reaction.”)

Another crime novel by Harlan Coben has taken over Netflix. This time it is like that Miss youan adaptation of the 2014 novel of the same namewhich turns out to be a fairly faithful screen version of the source material.

The series follows Kat Donovan (Slow horses‘ Rosalind Eleazar), a detective whose life is turned upside down when her former fiancé Josh (Ashley Walters), who disappeared from her life more than a decade ago, suddenly appears on a dating app just as her father’s convicted murderer is about to die a natural death.

From there, the twists and turns keep coming as Kat struggles to figure out the reason for her father’s death… and why her future husband left her just a day later.

Here’s a deeper look at the conclusion of the series.

What happened to Kat’s ex Josh when he left?

In the finale, Kat finally confronts Josh at his home, where he now lives with a daughter named Sadie and his late wife’s father, who helps him care for the child. Josh reveals to her that he left all those years ago, hoping a clean break would make their breakup easier, and apologizes when she makes it clear that’s not true. He claims that he did not create the dating profile, but possibly his daughter did. When she comes to the conclusion that he must have learned the truth about her father’s corruption from Monte (Marc Warren), who was paid to take the blame for his death, he must have set out to tell her To hide the truth, and he doesn’t do that. I don’t deny that.

What will become of the puppy farm murderer?

The subplot of the entire season revolves around Titus (Steve Pemberton), a tempestuous puppy farm owner who casually kidnaps people with money and forces them to make large cash transfers to him in order to stay alive. In the end, it is Brendan (Oscar Kennedy), the son of one such victim, Dana Fells (Lisa Faulker), who brings Kat into the investigation. Kat discovers that victims were lured by fake profiles – including, in Dana’s case, one of Josh – and held hostage on the farm in exchange for ransom. After Titus kidnaps Brendan in a moment of desperation during Dana’s escape attempt, Kat tracks down his farm, confronts him and ultimately shoots him. With this, Dana has freed herself and the other prisoners and her son survives a gunshot wound to the leg caused by Titus.

Who actually killed Kat’s father?

It’s only in the final moments of the series that we learn the truth about Clint’s (Lenny Henry) murder. Kat learns the identity and whereabouts of her father’s lover from Calligan (James Nesbitt), who has blackmailed Clint into cooperating with his illegal activities in order to hide his extramarital affair. When she visits the man Parker, she learns that he tried to end their long-term relationship to protect Kat and her mother. Later, after Josh’s prints are discovered on the murder weapon, Josh confesses that he stabbed Clint – just to protect Aqua (Mary Malone), who attacked Clint after seeing him in an argument with Parker. Although Aqua promised not to tell Kat or her mother, she insisted that he live his truth, and Clint reacted violently, and when Josh intervened, he accidentally stabbed Clint. Clint’s friend Stagger (Richard Armitage) then insisted on covering up the scene to protect Kat, per Clint’s dying wish. Therefore, Monte was tasked with taking responsibility for Clint’s death.

What’s next for Kat and Josh?

After Josh confesses the whole truth, Kat is visibly devastated by the truth, but instead of leaving his apartment, she sits back down on his bed and touches his hand with her pinky. She previously told Josh that they could have survived the truth instead of him leaving, and perhaps she plans to stick to that.

How does the ending compare to the book?

The end of Miss you is very, very similar to the book. In the book, Josh is instead called Jeff, Clint was called Henry, and his lover was called Sugar, but the ending is essentially the same: Kat learns that her father was killed by Jeff, who was defending Aqua from an attack – this time, by a gunshot, not by a knife – and Stagger covered it up to protect Kat’s memory of her father. The written version also hints that Kat and her former flame might still be able to move forward together despite such a devastating revelation, which came after a decade of unnecessary silence.
