Koan Kane, koan Neuer, koane points: The injury-plagued league leaders Bayern Munich stumbled at the blatant outsiders FSV Mainz 05 and surprisingly suffered their first defeat of the season in the Bundesliga. Without eight professionals like English star striker Harry Kane and captain Manuel Neuer in goal, the harmless Munich team deservedly lost 1:2 (0:1) to the ninth-place team.

Coach Vincent Kompany still has to wait for the de facto coronation as Christmas champion; the competition in the title fight can make up ground again. Whirlwind Jae-sung Lee (41st, 61st) shocked the bewildered Bayern with a brace and caused a surprise. National player Leroy Sane (87th) only managed cosmetic results.

The Munich team can only theoretically be pushed out of the top spot before the Christmas break; due to the much better goal difference compared to Eintracht Frankfurt, their status is virtually secured until January. The SGE could move up to three points with a win on Sunday (7.30 p.m./DAZN) at RB Leipzig, and defending champion Bayer Leverkusen is also well in the race.

In addition to Kane, who is expected to return at the end of the year against Leipzig on Friday, and Neuer, Kompany had to do without Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, Joao Palhinha and the long-term injured Josip Stanisic and Hiroki Ito. He not only reacted to the failures, but also brought Eric Dier into central defense for the first time since the cup game in the same place at the end of October. “The team has to be dominant and try to score goals,” demands Kompany before kick-off at Sky.

The guests initially had the usual majority of possession – but as coach Bo Henriksen demanded, the Mainz team appeared brave and defended well. Michael Olise (6th) put the first exclamation mark with his shot against the post, shortly afterwards the Frenchman headed just over the goal (12th). But as a result, the Munich offensive faltered enormously.

The Mainz team had to cope with bad news: After winning the ball, captain Jonathan Burkardt suddenly ran towards the goal alone, and Kim disturbed the striker at the last moment (13th). Burkardt was injured and Armindo Sieb came on for him.

But the hosts are unimpressed. Even magic foot Jamal Musiala couldn’t hurt the robust opponent. When it was 1-0, a cross from Sieb that was actually wayward was deflected, and Lee tricked the ricochet past Peretz to take the lead. After the break, the Munich team rebelled, but remained largely harmless.

Instead, Lee took advantage of the renewed disarray in the middle and scored off a deflection from a few meters. The long weak Sane dusted off after a blocked shot by Joshua Kimmich.
